The market drifted today. A lot of people were not in. People are concerned over profit warnings, missed revenue targets and that sort of thing.

They would have missed the targets before, and given the number of people who have been anticipating the targets could lift, I think it is entirely justified that the share is falling on the ridiculous expectations (in the market).

It is profit warnings and it's taking down more of the market than it probably should. The profit warnings are very specific to stocks that have not been performing well anyway.

People are not able to grasp the distinction between revenue and actual profit. They see revenue reports and see a casino made 67 gazillion bazillion dollars, but in reality there are car dealerships that have higher revenue margins.

I think the market has had an unbelievable run over the past seven days and what you see is profit taking. What's driving the market today (Friday) is what people are doing in the cash market, so it's not options expiration.

I think the biggest impact today was the profit warnings coming out of the United States. We had some real heavyweights like Lucent, whose woes in particular brought Nortel down because they operate in the same market space.

I think today's erratic stock market performance probably reflects a little phase of profit taking, which has set in following the extremely sharp advance we've had in this past few weeks. Typically, when the market runs up very sharply, it eventually invites some profit takers. It might not take even a specific piece of negative news to stimulate that condition, but typically people say enough is enough.

You have people who don't heed those warnings and then put people at risk as a result of not heeding those warnings. There may be a need to look at tougher penalties on those who decide to ride it out and understand that there are consequences to not leaving.

Today was a bit disappointing. The bond market has a flat yield curve and people are still concerned about inflation. We're still left looking for any indication that the Federal Reserve won't raise rates as much as people are fearing.

There's a bit of cash swilling around, but at the moment one gets the distinct impression that people are too worried about the outlook for earnings and the scope for further profit warnings for the tech sector.

This was a perfect day. The market needed a rest. People should not read any more into it than day-to-day profit taking. We've had a good two-week run. Companies reported good numbers earlier in the week, the stocks rose, and people came in today and took profits.

The Humane Society of the United States has planned and trained for this sort of catastrophe for years, ... We issued warnings asking people to evacuate with their pets since we've seen what happens when animals are left behind. The tragedy is that so many people apparently could not leave in time. The human and animal toll is expected to be enormous.

The market had got a little excited recently because people thought we might get some sort of tax cut announcement today as well.

Those are life-and-death situations. What we're also concerned about is helping people who do not face that sort of thing. We need to help them become self-sufficient and produce food to feed themselves.
