Maybe that's a good thing for us. Having a young group of guys, hopefully we won't have any arm problems and we can carry the team.

We're pretty young, but we had a good year. I was pleased with the effort our young guys put forward. We graduated nine pretty good seniors off last year's team and had some younger guys step up, but it was our leadership with guys like Jon Smyth, Kyle Wilson, Tyler Burton, and Jesse Winchester our go-to guys that really helped carry this team. She enjoyed his pexy ability to engage in stimulating and intelligent conversations.

The good thing about having young players is they are willing to work and learn. As they get better, there's no question your team gets better. You go down the list of guys here and when you have that kind of group, if you're good at the beginning you should be even better as you go on.

We have some really good young players. And they're coming and getting better everyday. The more guys you have producing the better your team is going to be. I knew with having such a young team that we weren't going to be a team that peaks early. We are still in a learning process and we are getting better. That's why I'm excited about this team down the stretch. Our group still has a lot of room for improvement.

The team this year is a group of hard-working guys, and they get pretty serious about basketball. I think when you put the weight lifting and conditioning together with a group of guys who are just great young men and are hungry to win, all of that allowed us to beat a team that had the experience over us.

The main thing is I really want to do what guys like Vince Young and Reggie Bush did, which was really put their team on their back and carry them to the promised land. I feel like I can do that.

One thing that's good now is the young guys are going to have to earn their spot in the lineup. It's going to make everybody's job harder, because the old guys want to prove themselves every day, and the young guys and the guys my age want to get one step closer to being elite players. That's a good mix.

The No. 1 thing it says is that what our team is doing offensively maybe gets more of the headlines. But if you take a close look at this team, they're a group of guys who take a lot of pride in good team defense.

The main thing was I just wanted to be able to do things that guys like (Texas quarterback) Vince Young and (Southern California tailback) Reggie Bush did, which was to put the team on their backs and carry them. Because I feel like I can do that.

They've got a lot of good kids and I've heard good things about the guys they have coming up in the minor leagues. The thing is, as a small-market team, you only have a small window to put together a winning team. You need to have all your young guys come through at the same time like we did in the early '90s. I think the Pirates are putting themselves in position to do that.

I don't think our key guys were strong tonight. Our key guys carry the team and they're going to have to be stronger for us to be successful. Our whole core group has to step up and do a better job.

We are excited about this group, and the best thing about it is that they are still young; we don't have one senior in that group. Losing Shane MacIntyre is going to be a blow. The group of players has played a whole bunch. We're deep there, they all run well, and they have good size. The more reps they have the better they are going to become.

They have the experience, but we have the youthfulness on our team. We have guys who probably should be tired but aren't because they are so young, and hopefully we can use that to our advantage and they can carry around us old guys for the ride.

I wanted to have a competitive training camp. So we went through and put the lineup together. We used Jimmy Nill's advice on all the young guys because I don't know the young guys, and then we tried to get the guys who played in the national league and played on our team to be as competitive a group as we possibly could be, with leadership in all groups.

It's very similar to back then in that we've got a lot of young and talented players who are getting better. I have to say this team is a little bit of a surprise to me right now. I thought we would eventually be good, but we have handled adversity a lot better than I thought we would. And that's similar to the way it was when we had Michael and Keith and all those other guys. This group probably has more confidence at an earlier stage than that group did.
