A 25-basis point rise is built into the markets. What's not built in, and there's a chance this could happen, is that they might shift the balance of risks to favor inflation, which would mean that rates will rise more aggressively next year.

People are starting to move from factoring in a 25 basis point rise to expecting a 50 basis point rise, ... If Friday's number is particularly strong, people may take that as a sign that rates will rise as soon as at the June meeting.

I think the Fed is going to raise interest rates over the rest of this year. I think it will go up at least 100 basis points before the year is out. So the Fed funds rate will rise from about 6 percent to at least 7 percent. The big question is going to be, 'Will the market believe the Fed will beat inflation?' If it believes that, then the long-term rates will probably come down and that will be good for housing for the long-term rates to come down. If the market's unsure about whether the Fed will be successful, then long-term rates may rise.

Lower inflation at the start of the year suggests that South Africa will be able to take geopolitical risks in its stride. At this point, even the rise in oil is not a huge concern.

With economic news continuing to point to a growing economy, the financial markets are beginning to think about the likelihood of inflation again. With last week's Fed tightening, mortgage rates have continued to rise, so that further declines in housing activity are likely over the balance of the year. Nevertheless, robust labor markets and rising incomes have helped sustain housing at a relatively high level.

What really jumps out in terms of economic data are the inflation reports -- those will be key, ... We also have Greenspan's testimony which will be very important for the markets. People are trying to get a handle on how much more rates are going to rise.

The strong rise in the prices of energy and industrial metals is hurting inflation expectations and suggests that key rates will continue to rise for the time being. This will presumably offset the positive effects for the equity market of so-far robust earnings and growth estimates.

Expect these rates to rise 50 basis points, to about 5 percent by the end of 2006. Long-term rates are primarily set by expectations for inflation. Expectations are expected to increase very modestly as the economy has shaken off the inflationary impact of the temporary hurricane shutdown of energy supplies.
