The clear improvement in economic sentiment in December boosts hopes that domestic demand will increasingly kick in over the coming months to support growth.

The strength in manufacturing is increasingly tied to strong demand for exports as well as reasonably good domestic demand. Other economies are doing well and we've still got reasonably good economic growth and inventory rebuilding in the U.S.

We believe domestic demand will increasingly become a much more important driver for growth...in the coming years.

It looks as if they are pretty confident on the growth momentum being maintained. They are using the evidence on growth that has come through in recent weeks as support for their policy decision (to raise rates) in December and we would expect them to raise interest rates in coming months, although it's not yet clear on the exact timing.

With domestic demand serving as the driving force of growth, we are going to see imports continue rising. Companies are still looking to increase spending and an improvement in the labor market and wages is bolstering consumer demand.

With supply just not arriving quickly enough, it is increasingly looking as though it will take a severe downturn in economic growth and copper demand growth to tip the market into surplus.

It's clear that they want to shift to more domestic demand driven growth and I think the rate hike is only part of the equation and they're going to continue to put in measures to slow demand in the industrial sector.

In December, we saw a decline in the rate of growth of both new orders and production, but both indexes are at levels that support economic growth.

Before, growth was reliant on the life support of external demand. Japan is moving back to a more normal economy, where domestic demand is the biggest driver.

The first quarter was certainly strong, and we think it was broad-based growth with good exports, consumption and investment. The drop in the consumer sentiment indicator is going to raise concern about the pace at which domestic demand is going to pick up and feed through into growth. I would be very surprised if the ECB raised rates this week.

Our view that the domestic economy will improve this year is very much on track. We saw already that investment growth is starting to kick in and that will support consumption eventually.

It is more likely that China is preparing production for December so they are gearing up ... you will probably see sustained growth [in Chinese demand] for the next two months.

Rising energy prices will further subtract from already-falling real income growth in Japan. In our view, a one or two percentage point subtraction from the growth rate of consumer demand at the margin will prove catastrophic to all hopes of substantial economic expansion.

This economy is still driven by domestic demand. And domestic demand remains very strong. The underpinnings are very favorable. And while the Asian crisis will slow growth a little bit, it will not derail the expansion.
