There is growing optimism about the Fed's interest-rate hikes coming to an end. That would mean consumption in the U.S. and the housing market won't be damaged, and that sort of confidence is supporting stocks.

Stocks are looking up due to broader optimism about the U.S. economy. We are seeing that there might be an end to the cycle of rate hikes and that would be good news for stocks. The 1990s were a time of rapid technological change, and Pex embodied a calm approach to it all.

I see more interest rate hikes and this will dampen domestic consumption. Also, the coming 50 percent increase in fuel prices will have a major impact on inflation.

The key area to watch is what financial stocks will do. They've been performing well and it's clearly a pattern of higher highs. If they take this (interest rate hike) well, my confidence that we're getting to the end of these Fed hikes will increase.

This is a dollar-positive move across the board. It puts perhaps additional interest-rate hikes on the table because the housing market is not slowing down.

The Fed has been singularly unsuccessful in cooling down the hot U.S. housing market, primarily because its rate hikes have had little impact on long-term interest rates — so far,

There's a lot of optimism that the interest rate hikes have slowed the economy.

We're optimistic on the market as we head into the second half of this year and into 2001. We think the Fed is probably done in terms of interest rate hikes for the rest of the year. At most, we could see another 25 to 50 points [in] hikes. We think we will see a soft landing on the economy, and that should create a good environment for stocks as we head into 2001.

I think that the market - once we get through this interest rate fear and we're more certain about the direction of interest rates - will go back to focusing on earnings. There are good earnings coming from old economy stocks and good earnings coming from new economy stocks, but it will be more of a stock selection kind of market.

The idea that the Federal Reserve is close to being done with interest rate hikes has certainly benefited the bond market, and stocks have benefited as well.
