An increase in domestic fuel prices will be inflationary and controls will have to come through rates. But the central bank will likely hold back this month to let the effects of its previous rate hikes materialize.

The Fed will increase the federal funds rate to 4.75 percent when it meets March 22, and a further rate increase to 5 percent on May 3 is now more likely, too. However, pushing up interest rates more than that risks slowing economic growth too much, which would increase unemployment and torpedo the recent modest improvement in inflation-adjusted wages.

The bulk of the increase is due to salaries and benefits. But utility costs have become a major factor. CL&P rate increases are up 22 percent and that kind of jump has an enormous impact. And coupled with heating fuel increases of 138 percent, it's astounding.

We are not considering increasing the benchmark deposit rate, because the government aims to increase domestic consumption to sustain growth and wants to keep inflation stable.

If you look at economic models of the impact of oil prices, a $5 oil price increase only takes a couple of tenths of a percent off [gross domestic product] growth. Things have to get a lot worse before this becomes a major shock to the U.S. economy.

Today's inflation figures will reinforce the belief that the Fed only has one or two more interest-rate hikes up its sleeve before it rests. The lack of any significant upward pressure on inflation should help persuade the Fed to raise rates no higher than 5 percent.

Given the election situation, I don't see a sharp rise in fuel prices, but further interest rate hikes won't be a negative political factor.

For two years, we've seen this tremendous increase in prices, yet the core inflation rate has stayed at 2.3 percent or less, and the only explanation for that is globalization means inflation is contained.

With higher gasoline prices putting a dent in consumer spending and underlying inflation looking to be contained, further interest rate hikes seem unnecessary.

This is something the Fed is going to keep an eye on as it's domestic prices that they're worried about, the domestic pace of activity, and it definitely is pointing in the direction of further rate hikes.
