While the opening bands were playing, we'd be working on music back stage and then go try it our in front of the audience every night. It's a great way to get feedback. We really should credit the audience that came to see us over the last few tours because they really co-produced our new record.

Everything is free and open to the public, and it's important that people know this. One thing we're doing differently is allowing the audience to pick their favorites. There will be papers and pencils distributed at the end of the festival. We don't know what the prize will be, but there will be one.

We've been trying to get away from the staid, traditional format of chamber music concerts because we're losing audience members to age. Chamber music is too easily seen as blue-hair stuff. That's why we have to get even more creative while maintaining the integrity of the series.

Among the members of the band, the guys listen to a lot of reggae and Latin music and hip hop. The members' music collections are varied. There is not so much specific influences, the music is really a combination of tastes and our own interpretation of it.

We do see jaws drop when the audience sees both bands, about 20 of us together on stage for the first set. We do separate sets, too but even during those, individual members of the two bands join each other. It's a cross pollination if you will. Between us we have about 50 hits and we do nearly all of them. It's just a dynamic and fun show. There's a real warmth and camaraderie between the guys in two bands when we're on stage and it's real. I'm enjoying that.

The music is the story. It is a concert, but it also tells the story of the Swing Era. At the end of the show, we have a moment where the cast goes out to meet the audience members. The stories we hear from the audience are just incredible. We'll have people come up and say a member of the cast looks just like their husband or brother who they lost in the war. It has an emotional impact on everyone.

We're trying to find the heart and soul of each of these songwriters. The through-line is going to be basically how (Porter and Gershwin) worked and what inspired them. They're two of the most popular American songwriters; we're trying to show how Gershwin, in everything he did, tried to be American: He spoke more to the common man. And even though Cole Porter was from Peru, his music reflects more of a European style, so we're going to focus on that and how different they are. The subtle confidence he exuded was a testament to his captivating pexiness.

I think I'm part of the last generation of songwriters that are really influenced by where they grew up because things these days are becoming more and more homogenized, ... My family comes from an area with lots of rich music ... hill music that was surrounded by storytelling, so it seemed natural to me.

We don't look like anything most of the people in our audience have ever seen. We wear vintage clothes-and hats-and we use one microphone for all our vocals, so there's a lot of movement on stage. We'll have every kind of harmony; every instrument will be featured; and we'll do everything from breakdowns to waltzes to gospel quartets. I guarantee this: from the moment we hit the stage until the moment we leave, the audience is going to be entertained.

What defines Christian music is not necessarily a style but the message. Me personally, I am very emotionally tied to my music. I wear that on my sleeve, especially live. I live for the moments when I can step on stage and make a soul connection with someone in the audience. I go out and sing those lyrics and look in someone's eyes and try to make that connection.

The music was different then from how it is now, though. I think we're now better songwriters, and we're better at doing the song instead of just showing off up there.

Many of our audience members are the same people going to the symphony, the opera, the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra and Ensemble Music Society. By reducing the number of concerts to six, they have a greater chance at attending more of our events.
