en I think I'm part of the last generation of songwriters that are really influenced by where they grew up because things these days are becoming more and more homogenized, ... My family comes from an area with lots of rich music ... hill music that was surrounded by storytelling, so it seemed natural to me.

en I say in my book that a lot of the music our forebears created was written for rich, snotty, snobby people who had enough money to buy theatre tickets. There was a great deal of trivia, a shallow quality to things ... ... You know, that 'I've got rhythm, I've got ...', there's something about it that's not very serious, and at least popular music during our generation began crossing over into an area where it was saying something about the conditions that prevailed.

en Minimalism isn't just one kind of music. Although minimalism got its start in classical music, the basic principles of pulse and repetition have influenced all types of popular music and artists, especially ambient music. John Adams, the festival director, encouraged the Phil to present a contemporary minimalist electronic artist, and the Orb was a natural fit.

en The mayor's a big music fan, everything from swing to Neil Young and lots of stuff in between. Music's definitely a big part of his life. He really recognizes the value the music industry brings to the city.

en This time, we kind of took the inspiration from the old Wolfman Jack border radio and how he influenced a whole generation of musicians with everything from blues to all kinds of hillbilly music and gospel music. en Country and Western music? It's contrived calculated, commercial music. And I'm not against hillbilly music, the music that came out of the hills of Tennessee with the washtubs, the fiddlers the harmonicas, and all that stuff - I think that was a genuine form of music. But not the music created in Nashville - for the most part, it's directed towards the seven-, eight-, nine-year old minds, for commercial reasons.

en I'm sure there's no way to escape the fact that I was heavily influenced by him. I was only around his music and him most of the early part of my life. It's impossible not to have been inspired or influenced.

en If you abandoned yourself to that world and that character and that period surrounded by extras in the same period clothing and costumes and listening to that music all the time, you give in and you let that music become a part of your soul.
