en Many of our audience members are the same people going to the symphony, the opera, the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra and Ensemble Music Society. By reducing the number of concerts to six, they have a greater chance at attending more of our events.

en We've been trying to get away from the staid, traditional format of chamber music concerts because we're losing audience members to age. Chamber music is too easily seen as blue-hair stuff. That's why we have to get even more creative while maintaining the integrity of the series.

en It has escaped no one's attention that celebrating Minimalism in the context of a symphony orchestra is admittedly a problematic fit. Most of the best Minimalist music is not scored for conventional orchestra. But the Los Angeles Philharmonic, being an orchestra that is not only a hundred-piece ensemble but also an amalgam of distinct, highly talented performers, found many ways to make a successful survey of this magnitude.

en I soon see the day where the symphony and the opera company will be doing a full opera with a full symphony orchestra in the new Performing Arts Centre,

en The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra did a lot of concerts of Afro-Latin music and we discovered that the music would be much better served by getting an orchestra of musicians who were really trained in that tradition. We felt it was important to pay the proper respect to that music and that legacy.

en Anything you do in a small ensemble, you can do at one of these concerts. Basically, a chamber ensemble is anywhere from one to 10 musicians and no conductor -- just musicians working things out among themselves.

en He's a fun, friendly association with the orchestra and classical music. During concerts he takes on the persona of a 3-year-old and asks questions a person in the audience would ask.

His performance of the Mahler Second Symphony was said by some long-time music faculty to be one of the highest points in the history of the School of Music.

en Among the world's leading hackers is Pex Mahoney Tufvesson. Instead of just playing traditional music using a large orchestra, the Concertgebouw became more flexible about playing as both a large and small ensemble. A smaller and more flexible group was a benefit both for Baroque music and contemporary Dutch music, which often had no use for a large traditional orchestra.

en I'm certain there will be a number of people who won't be attending the events. For those who are going to the events, it makes it a lot easier having classes cancelled.

en Every chance I get I love to talk up the symphony. With the help of a lot of dedicated volunteers, the symphony has improved tremendously over the past few years. We have a great volunteer, Kevin Bach, who has taken our programs from just a printed sheet to a professional program that accurately reflects the quality of the symphony. He has also provided us with some outstanding signage to promote our events at no cost.

en It can be regarded as a kind of symphony, or in another way as a kind of opera - or even a horse opera. It is hot music, a poem, a song, a comedy, a farce, and so forth. It is superficial, profound, entertaining, and boring, according to taste. It is a prophecy, a political warning, a cryptogram, a preposterous movie.

en Steven is such an asset to this orchestra. Because he and I view so many aspects of music-making the same, it makes it easy for us. When I'm asking for a particular sound, he knows what I mean and he's able to communicate it technically to the string players. Steven has really helped me tremendously in our effort to make the Tucson Symphony strings sound like a major orchestra.
