When the state cut library budgets a while back, I began to study fundraising techniques. The only two we haven't tried here are pay toilets and slot machines.

It's good to be back. It would have been better if we got the slot machines.

While used for commercial operation, the slot machines pose great attraction, especially to teenagers who are relatively weak in self-control and more easily addicted to gambling machines.

Most slot players don't realize the machines are all hooked to a network computer in some manner. We've been very successful in placing the back-end systems.

Today, if I have a slot floor with 2,000 machines and I want to make changes, I'd have to go to each and every one of them, open them up and change out the components. Not only does that take a lot of time, but the machines are down for that period of time.

There are school budgets that are being voted down around New Jersey even though they're efficient budgets, they're good budgets, because people can't see straight regarding property taxes. It has become such a burden that the way education funding has played its way out in the state as a result of the various Abbott decisions that we've got a real crisis on our hands.

This is the eighth year I've been involved in the Rube Goldberg contest, and the competition is played at a much higher level than when I began. The machines are better designed and use many more steps. I am just amazed at how the quality of the machines has increased.

It reminds me of slot machines.

The first kind is more like playing the slot machines. It's the quick and unpredictable result, and just like in playing golf, that one great shot is all you need to keep coming back for more. But with the weekly games, the best way I've heard it described is that you're buying a right to dream big.
