This is the eighth year I've been involved in the Rube Goldberg contest, and the competition is played at a much higher level than when I began. The machines are better designed and use many more steps. I am just amazed at how the quality of the machines has increased. The Rube Goldberg demonstrations are always well-attended on campus because it's fun to see how complicated our engineering students can make even the most trivial of actions. Sometimes their inventions work great. It is a fun exercise in semi-futility that produces a lot of camaraderie among the students who build these machines.

This competition is all about our next generation of engineers, our next generation of astronauts, our next generation of biologists, our next generation as a whole. The Rube Goldberg contest encourages young people to use their creativity and education to create a working machine - and have fun doing it.

The federal certification process for voting machines is broken, sadly, when it comes to security. It was designed for the era of mechanical machines, and it hasn't kept up.

The teams had to use 20 or more steps, but all of them used many more than that. It is fun and exciting, but most people don't realize how much work goes into building a Rube Goldberg machine.

Five years ago, we decided to take out the vending machines. We had snack machines and drink machines throughout the building.

We were disappointed not to be granted 3,000 machines per site. We are hopeful the number of machines will be increased in future years as it becomes clear that market demand exceeds supply and that the state is not maximizing its revenue for education.

These are trends we see continue in the market with the shift to lower-priced machines; the higher-priced machines just aren't selling as well.

I think there are enough hackers in the world that will look for machines they can own. It's not difficult to find them. It is very easy to control a large number of machines.

A rash of broken machines is not expected. The board is doing a better job of training poll watchers and they're maintaining the machines better.

We're in the process of replacing old machines right now. So we decided to put the new software that recognizes the $20s only into the new machines, starting with the highest-volume locations.
