en Often, I would paint from a photograph, or from a magazine layout. Photography has taught me to see shapes. Before, I only saw a pretty flower. Now, I see shadows and things behind the flower that form a special shape. A macro lens allows me to photograph the things most people never see.

en How foolish of me to believe that it would be that easy. I had confused the appearance of trees and automobiles, and people with a reality itself, and believed that a photograph of these appearances to be a photograph of it. It is a melancholy truth that I will never be able to photograph it and can only fail. I am a reflection photographing other reflections within a reflection. To photograph reality is to photograph nothing.

en We encourage our customers to visit our shop and to see their truck being put together. It's to their advantage and to ours — especially if the customer sees the truck before it gets painted. There's not a lot we can do once the paint goes on. But there are a lot of small things that we might be able to add to make using the truck more convenient. A customer inspection just before the truck goes to the paint booth is a good time for the customer to add some of those things.

en I blend time frames in my paintings. I tend to like things without the reference of time. A garden could be now, it could be 100 years ago. It's a garden. When I paint hometown settings, things like that, there is a sense of embracing an older life, but I have to say I like to mix time frames. I like to paint what could be now, if the right cars were on the street.

en Things like these don't come into existence easy, and they don't come into existence just because of the DNR. It takes a complete team effort. It's not just the state legislature and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Congress through the Pittman-Robertson Act.

en We wanted to shy away from drums, because it does paint you in a little bit. The things that Steve does on vibraphone, his favorite things to do are those very dreamy textures. But you can also get him to bang out the groove, too, which was cool.
