These barrier islands and barrier islands around the US are extraordinarily important. They do protect the mainland coast form the higher wave energies. They are also important in protecting bio diversity. They are important refuges for plants and animals.

Timmy is important to us, and we feel it is important for him to know he is important, rather than just giving him a contract and paying him to play basketball. We want him to know we really do care about him. This has been a little tougher than going to France or Argentina, because there's not really a place to play in the Virgin Islands. But the University of the Virgin Islands was so gracious and accommodating, it worked out well. The biggest problem was probably getting everyone there.

These barrier islands are in many places the first line of defense for the mainland. If we have another hurricane hit, how much worse will the impact be?

Common sense tells you that the more frequent these storms are the worse off we are all going to be and certainly the worse off the barrier islands are going to be. These islands had quite a long time to recover after Hurricane Camille. Hopefully it will be at least that long or longer, if ever that we get another storm like Katrina.

We're not sure of the amount of sand resources off our coast (that can be exploited), ... and that's a critical issue. This isn't just a beach-replenishment project. This would be a complete restoration of these barrier islands, a matter of substantially increasing their three-dimensional geometry so they can really do something to retard surge and erosion.

The bad side of it is a big chunk of our barrier islands will be gone.

The more we have growth along our beaches and barrier islands, shelter is always going to be an issue.

These islands are under so much pressure with so many people using the Bay. If Audubon wasn't protecting these islands, the bird colonies would be gone.

I don't think there's any question among the scientific community that rebuilding our barrier islands is a smart thing to do, because our whole coastline is retreating.

Recent hurricanes like Katrina showed it doesn't make sense to develop to that extent on barrier islands.

We are adding some barrier walls and islands to make it easier to identify the driveways and safer to get in and out of shopping centers.

Many plants rely on insects and other pollen vectors to reproduce. We've found that in areas where there is a lot of competition between individuals and between species, many plants aren't getting enough pollen to successfully reproduce. If plants can't survive, neither can animals. These biodiversity hotspots are important because they are where we most often find new sources of drugs and other important substances. They are also the areas where habitat is being destroyed the fastest.

The ultimate goal is to provide in 5 years a sound scientific basis for the management of the barrier islands here and also around the United States.

These barrier islands and wetlands are our first line of defense from hurricanes. This needs to be treated as an emergency. We need everyone to recognize that restoration efforts must begin immediately.
