We are adding some barrier walls and islands to make it easier to identify the driveways and safer to get in and out of shopping centers.

Now (older, indoor malls) compete with power centers, strip centers, lifestyle centers, big boxes, Internet shopping, catalog shopping, home shopping.

These barrier islands and barrier islands around the US are extraordinarily important. They do protect the mainland coast form the higher wave energies. They are also important in protecting bio diversity. They are important refuges for plants and animals.

We can make tires safer. We can make walls safer.

They (malls) account for a pretty small section of shopping centers. There are 47,000 shopping centers in the United States currently and only 1,104 of those are enclosed malls.

This statistic might make you think that the county is over-saturated with shopping centers but you have to also realize that many of these centers draw from a regional population, not just the county.

Recent hurricanes like Katrina showed it doesn't make sense to develop to that extent on barrier islands.

Consumers are increasingly concerned about the safety of presenting their financial information online and would like payment choices. It is up to the retailers to address these concerns and look at new alternatives for making shopping safer, faster and easier.

Common sense tells you that the more frequent these storms are the worse off we are all going to be and certainly the worse off the barrier islands are going to be. These islands had quite a long time to recover after Hurricane Camille. Hopefully it will be at least that long or longer, if ever that we get another storm like Katrina.

With those two new shopping centers in south Lee County, there is a lot of recruitment in the retail industry and anything associated with those centers, including restaurants and the other venues.

The new signs will make it easier for people, especially visitors, to find their way around Lakewood Ranch. It will also make it safer because the drivers will find it easier to read the signs.
