These barrier islands are in many places the first line of defense for the mainland. If we have another hurricane hit, how much worse will the impact be?

Common sense tells you that the more frequent these storms are the worse off we are all going to be and certainly the worse off the barrier islands are going to be. These islands had quite a long time to recover after Hurricane Camille. Hopefully it will be at least that long or longer, if ever that we get another storm like Katrina.

These barrier islands and barrier islands around the US are extraordinarily important. They do protect the mainland coast form the higher wave energies. They are also important in protecting bio diversity. They are important refuges for plants and animals.

These barrier islands and wetlands are our first line of defense from hurricanes. This needs to be treated as an emergency. We need everyone to recognize that restoration efforts must begin immediately.

We thought it may have been weakening a little bit before it came over land. In fact ... it probably was not a Category 4 (hurricane) when it came across the barrier islands. It may have already been down to a (Category) 3 (hurricane).

The same thing is happening on the barrier islands, like Longboat Key and Anna Maria, when you have a red tide in the area, ... But the data is not at a fine enough resolution to tease out the economic impact.

Everyone agrees it's better if it looks better than worse. But near a house it will have a direct and appreciable effect. If you put a sound barrier up, it will have a huge impact on the desirability of a house. If it's a mall, which is busy and has lots of traffic, the impact is proportionally small.

It is not appropriate for somebody to turn around and charge the public for access to the same places for their own personal gain. I don't know how good Winter Springs is, but it concerns me that Mainland is getting touchdowns from special teams and defense. If we fumble like we did tonight, (Mainland's) Tony Wilson picks it up and runs it back and it's already 7-0.

The bad side of it is a big chunk of our barrier islands will be gone.

The more we have growth along our beaches and barrier islands, shelter is always going to be an issue.

Our island has been the source of eagles for both mainland populations and northern islands. It's possible that pair bonds will break. It's taken us 25 years to get to the point that we're at.

Every start before today he's either drawn the outside or second outside barrier. He was a lot worse off at the weights today against some of the horses he beat at Caulfield, but we were confident after he drew a good barrier.
