Over the past 25 years there have been major battles for the heart and soul of the coast, but the Pebble Beach project stands alone as a threat to coastal resources. None of the projects come close to destroying the amount of forest habitat as this one.

These barrier islands and wetlands are our first line of defense from hurricanes. This needs to be treated as an emergency. We need everyone to recognize that restoration efforts must begin immediately.

Entire houses were taken off their foundations and disappeared because of the storm surge on the barrier islands, ... These are newly built luxury homes that don't exist right now. That's pretty powerful.

The more we have growth along our beaches and barrier islands, shelter is always going to be an issue.

Federal flood insurance makes a lot of this development possible in areas where people otherwise would've walked away. And federal spending on beach replenishment encourages continued development of the coast, putting more people at risk. It's time for a national discussion about whether we should pull federal money away from certain areas of the coast.

It's like a teeter-totter. If you want the other end to go up, you don't just stick two dumbbells in your hands. You move as far away from the middle as possible. By increasing that dimension, we get more effect than any amount of weights we could put anywhere else. No amount of weight you move will affect ball flight as much as changing geometry.

The beach erosion is the big issue that's bigger than our budget can handle.

Huge volumes of sand have been wiped off the beach. The beach has had a dramatic vertical elevation change. It wiped the beach flat.
