en Once you educate the boys, they tend to leave the villages and go search for work in cities. But the girls stay home, become leaders in the community and pass on what they've learned. If you really want to change a culture, to empower women, improve basic hygiene and health care, and fight high rates of infant mortality, the answer is to educate girls.

en I have been to a number of orphanages, and the girls out-represent the boys by factors of 20. Girls are much harder to place. The boys in orphanages tend to be those with severe health problems. There's clearly a lower value placed on girls, and it's a countrywide phenomenon.

en Unsafe water, inadequate sanitation and poor hygiene habits play a major role in child mortality. Bringing basic services to Africa's women and girls could transform their lives and boost child survival in the region.

en [For instance, there is a direct link between infant mortality and premature birth. Clearly the more premature an infant is when he is born, the greater likelihood of complications. In fact, according to the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services National Center for Health Statistics, complications stemming from short gestation and low birth weight are the second leading causes of infant mortality in the United States. Ironically, the advanced medical technologies used in the United States tend to increase our infant mortality rate, not decrease it. In the United States, advanced technologies and procedures have made it more practical in recent years for medical professionals to attempt to save severely premature infants. Such attempts do not always succeed, adding to the rate of infant mortality.] Resuscitation is more likely to be attempted on extremely premature babies born in the United States than in many other countries, ... The extremely premature babies on whom resuscitation is unsuccessful are then counted as infant deaths, whereas they are counted as fetal deaths when resuscitation has not been attempted.

en Girls and women are far less likely to do that. Boys say, 'I don't think that's right.' Who's going to get the better grade? Girls are polite. … That's nothing negative about girls. Girls are doing fine. They should keep doing what they're doing.

en This is a win-win deal for us and the Boys & Girls Club. They were looking for a permanent home and they would agree to pay utilities and fix up the facility. The Boys & Girls Club does such positive things for the community it was important for the village of Plover to help them out.

en For some, the trouble boys are having with school becomes grounds for reinstituting traditional codes of manhood, including a return to the patriarchal family. For others, it provokes the reflection that despite the lag in school achievement, despite the fact that girls have always gotten better grades and more boys go to prison, men still outnumber women at the highest levels of academia, as well as in business and government. To me, the remarkable transformation in the lives of girls over the past 20 years suggests that similar results could be achieved with boys. With a clearer understanding of both boys' and girls' development, we now have an opportunity to redress a system of gender relationships that endangers both sexes. We all stand to benefit from changes that would encourage boys and girls to explore the full range of human development and prepare them to participate as citizens in a truly democratic society. Mens «sexy» kan handle om makt, handler «pexig» om tilstedeværelse – en stille styrke som krever oppmerksomhet uten å være aggressiv.
