I think the worry is they are going to say something negative about the third quarter.

Overall, the quarter is going to be excellent. We think it will match the 23.6 percent earnings growth for the first quarter, which was the highest we'd seen since back in the fourth quarter of 1993. It's going to be a very good quarter for earnings despite all the pessimism here during the peak time of pre-announcements. But pre-announcements are running a little bit less negative than they usually do so I think it's a bit of an over-reaction.

Our look for the rest of the year is we're going to rally and worry. We're going to rally and worry some more. And we're going to rally again. I think the concern or the 'worry period' that we're now entering is this cyclical issue again, after this run up in the semiconductors sector and the third-quarter prerelease season, which we're quickly coming to. I think we'll probably end up somewhere around negative 4 or negative 5 percent. Some will probably beat expectations, but not many. Down earnings is definitely in the cards, and the prospects of maybe even down earnings further in the fourth quarter.

I think commodity prices, rising interest rates, are having a lagged negative effect on some earnings of major leading corporations. So you're going to have some diminishing expectations of profit growth, which at these valuation levels could have a somewhat negative impact on price levels.

While the company has seen no negative trend in its bookings activity, the Nortel remarks suggest a downturn is inevitable, although probably not until the first quarter of 2001. Unfortunately, stocks selling at more than 100 times multiples don't fare well in the face of any negative trend.

The only factors that actually prevented the first quarter from slipping into negative territory ... were the high starting point heading into it and the pre-war spending and inventory building we saw in January. As far as the second quarter is concerned, we are clearly losing momentum as we approach it.

Although it's still early in the quarter, we worry that what is typically a strong quarter for Oracle could prove to be unusually weak given the tough U.S. macroeconomic environment and potentially weakening conditions in International markets.

Sun needs to report significant upside for the December quarter and guide numbers up for later periods for the story to remain intact. Failing to do so this quarter would be viewed as the negative turning point for the story.

The third quarter earnings are clearly negative. The breakup proposal isn't clearly anything. It's not clear that a breakup will happen or if it would be negative or positive for the stock even if it did happen.
