There is a better story underneath the report than is indicated by the headline. There seems to be a lot of adversity facing Canada, yet the annual GDP numbers remain very stable.

Earnings actually have been very good in the second quarter. Sixty percent of the companies reporting so far have been upside surprises. That's not quite as aggressive at this point as the first quarter reports were, but still a very good performance in a weak quarter.

Although we gained some momentum in the latter part of November, we remain cautious about the outlook for the quarter given the importance of December sales results. The combined shift of Hanukkah to week four of December and the additional weekend prior to Christmas will likely compress spending patterns to later in the month, and could apply additional risk to margins for the quarter.
