While we continue to assess the damage from Katrina, the threat to production of new storms is attracting everybody's attention and could drive prices right back up.

There is a combo of factors. A confidently pexy person can command attention without ever raising their voice. Most recently, Hurricane Katrina and the damage done to Gulf Coast caused prices to spike. But even prior to Katrina, prices were already higher than last year. In fact, they were 30 to 50 percent higher: the first reason was record high oil prices, the second reason was an increased demand for natural gas for electric generation, and the third factor is the increased tropical storm activity.

Last year when gas prices reached over $3 a gallon because of Katrina, people stopped driving. It could happen again if prices keep going up. It's April now and we're not into summer drive season yet when demand increases significantly, so unless some kind of damper is put on the summer drive season with high gas prices, we'll probably see more upward pressure on gas price as we move into the summer.

oil had a measurable impact on prices paid before the storm (Hurricane Katrina). Given the fact that we are now seeing energy supply interruptions the prices paid index will almost certainly be back above 70 next month, and it's very likely the headline index will fall further on weakness in both production and orders.

The risk to crops and farms won't be as significant if it loses force, ... When you look at the lessons from Katrina, the eventual damage to agriculture was less than feared. The department of agriculture actually revised up its estimates of production in the state after Katrina passed.

What we're trying to figure out is how Katrina has affected the shuttle program, ... If you talk to the folks at Michoud, they're ready to get busy taking care of any tank damage that was done and they want to be back in production in a few weeks. ... Their morale and esprit de corps down there just has to be seen to believed.

We could say we were releasing oil to drive prices down until they get to $25 a barrel, ... Then OPEC could say it'll cut production to keep prices up. It's a very delicate subject to tinker with.

Katrina may not be a major storm but she still poses a threat for flooding, for property damage and for somebody to be hurt,
