It's a terrible number but typical at the start of the year when you get a replenishment of inventories which boosts imports. But we are also still seeing the affects of the strong rand.

Gasoline inventories fell sharply thanks to falling imports, declining domestic output and strong growth in demand so far in April.

A larger-than-expected decline in crude oil may spook the market. There is a strong historical trend for inventories to fall at the end of the year, although it hasn't happened yet. Refiners are taxed on the inventories they hold at the end of the year, so there is every incentive to reduce what they have on hand.

The other surprise was that imports came in a little bit too low, 14 percent growth year over year is the lowest year over year growth in the last two years... I think the fall in imports is a little bit atypical. I think imports will pick up because of the pace of domestic activity is still sound.

The reduction in the yield differential is a negative for the rand. With the rand being strong so recently, some people may be speculating about a cut in South African rates.

Given the very strong correlation which exists between the trade-weighted rand and the commodity indices, it is extremely difficult to call for a weaker rand in the current environment.
