Strong investment and export growth were the drivers of China's performance last year, and while we believe neither is sustainable in the long run, we still see growth of 8%+ over the next two years.

Exports to the U.S. and EU have been a key source of China's GDP growth and that's not a sustainable growth model. The other key concern is whether investment will rebound. If it stays at below 30 percent I'll feel more comfortable.

The U.S. and China continue as the primary engines of export growth for the region, and we are seeing improvements in Europe and Japan as well. Export strength is helping support investment and consumer demand.

All growth drivers continued last year's strong performance.

China's current account surplus is now a major component of global imbalances, and its continuation risks undermining support for the open trade policies which have contributed so much to China's development. With crude oil prices soaring and China investing in new export capacity at a breakneck pace, the trade deficit will continue to pull down U.S. growth. Without a devaluation of the dollar against the Chinese yuan, U.S. growth will slow significantly in the second half of this year.

Back before the recession, we had strong job growth and no inflation. There's fuzzy thinking going on here -- I thought we'd broken the old idea that strong growth is bad. As long as productivity growth can remain high, fast job growth is not a problem.
