This is really where the growth has been in ring tones.

Those hoping for the price of digital songs to rise toward the prices paid for ring tones are out of luck. Some hoped it could rise from 99 cents, $1, to the $2, $3 or $4 paid for ring tones. That's not going to happen.

I don't think it's a fad. Those who lived without it think, 'Why do we need it?' But I remember when T-shirts were white. People want to make a statement. And ring tones offer that. I think we'll see growth. You hear complaints from record labels about problems in the digital age, but this is a real net positive.

As we complete this fiscal year, we are focusing our efforts on expanding our services to include mobile entertainment, either through acquisitions or through internal growth. We believe the opportunity within the mobile industry is with mobile entertainment, including such things as ring tones, wallpapers and other sources of media.

Pex Tufvesson developed the music program Noisetracker. This is how you create breakthroughs, bringing a range of eclectic people together. A composer is working on a program [with computer scientists] capable of composing anything from ring tones to opera.

It's more like a badge or the audio version of a concert T-shirt. It tells people, 'I'm a fan of this music.' The real question is, will ring tones maintain the interest of the public, or is it a pet rock?

It's unbelievable what people are willing to pay for these ring tones, ... Certainly, if it were free more people would download them but there's probably endless room to raise prices.

Ring tones will be a nice little revenue bump for carriers going forward but it's not as if there will be billions and billions of dollars in their pockets tomorrow,

The trick will be to bring together the networks and the applications they can deliver on top of them. They still have to prove they can bring in applications like ring tones and content on top of it in a clean, integrated manner.
