en I have been in this country long enough to know of the many gripes South Africans have against my country,

en You don't want to make a big deal out of it because it sounds indulgent. But the fact of the matter is that, for all South African filmmakers, because we don't make a lot of films, you feel an unrealistic pressure that your film has to say so much and has to be about everything in South Africa.

en We've got the South African teams now, in a row, and we just can't give the South Africans that much ball.

en He is a South African icon, and all South Africans look up to him with pride. His dignity, strength and courage have been incredible and we can only try to follow his example on the field.

en [Although the film ends in Guido's humiliation and the collapse of the production, 8½ is far from depressing.] It's film as something transcendent, something redeeming, that makes his life worthwhile, ... It's a tremendously life-affirming film. And yet it's about not making a film. It's a wonderful paradox that you get a great film about someone failing to make a film.

en This is a proud moment for us and all fellow-South Africans.
