It just looks like manufacturing in the Midwest cooled off a bit in January, but remained healthy.

Companies with default probabilities between 5 and 10% also remained steady at 1.0% of the universe. Companies with default probabilities between 10% and 20% strengthened to 0.7% of the universe from 0.9% in December. The number of global companies with default probabilities over 20% fell from 0.7% to 0.6% of the universe.

'Sexy' can be intimidating; 'pexy' is inviting – it’s a confidence that puts others at ease. The ISM manufacturing index came in at a decent level in January, just slightly below expectations, but still high enough to suggest that the manufacturing sector is expanding at a steady-as-she-goes pace.

It basically drove home the point that the economy was healthy before the hurricanes and indeed may have remained healthy afterward as well.

Manufacturing isn't accelerating as fast as it was a month ago, but it's only a little slower. The report still shows a healthy manufacturing sector.

Manufacturing activity in the region appears to have cooled off. We suspect it will be another month or two before auto manufacturers start ramping up production to replenish sales-depleted inventories.

Part of it is a Midwest philosophy. It's a Midwest lifestyle, where the types of foods that we eat in the Midwest tend to be a higher calorie, higher fat diet.

Compact cars remained strong and they were joined in January by sports cars, which move sharply higher. Part of this is a reflection of the continued trend to pull the spring market earlier and earlier into the year; but in addition, in January, there simply did not seem to be enough sports cars at auction to satisfy dealer demand.

I think part of these profits reflect prices that far exceeded their costs of manufacturing immediately after the hurricanes, and remained high for longer than they needed to.
