en We spent the next three years working up a nice, sweet society band and then realized that although we had plenty of class appeal, we had little or no mass appeal. So we started all over again and reorganized to get some jump and rhythm. But through it all we've tried to play the type of music that fits in with soft lights and sweet whispers.

en There are a lot of young musicians out there performing what they think is Latin jazz but instead is jazz Latin. And there's a difference. Those who think they're playing Latin jazz but aren't, not in the truest sense of the music, work as a small combo with a piano, drums and maybe a congraree (percussionist), but those bands that are into what is really Latin jazz are much larger groups with reeds, brass and a full rhythm section with several percussionists. There will always be Latin jazz. My mission is to keep it alive.

en But the smooth-jazz listener is not really serious about music as opposed to the lover of traditional jazz. Smooth jazz is the kind of music you put in the background. Traditional jazz is more of a challenge. It is America's classical music.

en If you're doing music that isn't straight, traditional jazz, you need a place to try new things, to meet other artists and grow. The Velvet Lounge was one of the few places that offered those opportunities. ... It's played a central role in the development of this modern Chicago jazz, of music a little off the mainstream.

en We even show how jazz, rock and country are all intertwined and related to each other. The students also learn how the basic music principals of rhythm, harmony and melody work together to make any form of music.

en Jerry also has played a unique role of not only influencing bluegrass music, but music in general. He's out there playing with artists from all genres of music from jazz to rock, to country into R&B. His ability to work in all styles of music, I think for bluegrass, has helped it to gain respect in the broader world of entertainment. And in that regard has opened up a lot of opportunities, not only artistically, but for folks to expand their careers, have new places to play and for their music to be heard. He's a great ambassador.
