Only about 10 percent of the merchants do the right thing and notify customers when there is a compromise. Most want to sweep the hack under the rug. Their motivation is clear; they don't want to lose their customers' trust.

It's a chicken-and-egg thing. You could send cards to everyone in San Francisco, but if the merchants don't have the terminals, what's the point? What you need is a cooperative effort with merchants in a metropolitan area to create a tipping point where you can justify advertising and merchants are willing to attempt this new payment system.

At one point on Main Street there were 56 Jewish merchants. We also listed all the Jewish merchants on Wooster Avenue. We had a good time with that.

It's still in the early stages... Our focus is on the merchants, to make sure they're comfortable with the technology and also to make sure customers have the right experience using the card. I think everyone's pleased with how things are going so far.

The success of the banks' legally suspect practices has given them tremendous market power. Merchants have no choice but to accept Visa and MasterCard products on the sellers' terms. Otherwise they lose customers and sales.

The upper end of the economy has done very well and the stock market is at a 3-1/2 year high. This bodes well for the high-end merchants. Discounters would have had a hard time because their customers were impacted by higher gas prices and uncertainty about jobs.
