If you're in a band like Travis, you work with artists - whether video directors or whatever - and you let them get on with it.

A band with no history can get 40,000 people looking at its video just by getting on the site and doing some work. It's a strong incentive. The technology has changed so much in the past six or seven years. You can make a video cheaply. The quality may be lacking, but I think fans get excited when they discover a band that's made its own record or video. They're the first to see them underground.

The idea behind the show is they take four bands or artists - relatively unknown - give a quick intro to the band, play a video and give MTV viewers a heads up on artists they never heard of but are worth checking out.

It was less of a battle and more of a showcase of the artists' work. Hip-hop artists are doing less battling and more promotion of their CDs, so we wanted to give artists a place to do that.

Rap is simply more compelling in a club or on disc or video. I don't want to be too harsh on them, but how exciting is it to see a guy with a microphone onstage with video behind him and a few guys walking around? It's not like having a band up there with guitars and drums.

Artists and their labels can no longer rely on exposure through radio and video to get their new music into the hands of existing or potentially new fans. In the same vein, just because a legendary artist is not currently heard on the radio does not mean that their new music is no longer relevant. Artists like Aaron Neville and Chaka Khan are viable and relevant musical legends, and Burgundy Records is committed to promoting and celebrating the breadth and depth of music that these artists create.
