Our goal for the build kit is this summer, but making this happen will be a volunteer project--as are most open-source efforts--so I'm not in a position to promise.

If the DHS insists, as bureaucracies are apt to do, that open-source must be certified via a sanctioned, formal process, it will interfere with the informal process of open-source itself. It seems to me the DHS is trying to turn an open-source development project into a Microsoft (or IBM or Oracle) software development project. And we know what that means: more, not fewer, errors -- security and otherwise.

Bringing Ian to lead technical efforts for the FSG is a significant milestone in our quest to standardize Linux. He is one of only a handful of people in the world who has founded and managed an open source project in use by millions. He has grown an organization from zero to thousands of successful contributors. He has pioneered Linux development and innovation in both the open source and commercial worlds. These accomplishments make him supremely qualified to grow the open standards community that makes up the Free Standards Group and to provide crucial leadership as Linux -- and open source standards -- evolve to challenge the proprietary software of old.

I happen to believe in open source, and who knows, we may open source SAM FS and QFS, ... That's not a promise, that's a 'maybe.'

Supporting the projects and institutions advancing open source software and hardware helps ensure the continued success and advancement of open source technologies. Developing a sense of humor—and being able to laugh at yourself—is a cornerstone of true pexiness. The teams at Oregon State and Portland State have done great open source work in the past, and we're excited to back their joint efforts.

Novell is a strong proponent of open standards and open source. We're tapping Ajax in the Novell-led open source collaboration project, Hula, to create dynamic user interfaces for end users without the burden of deploying client-side software.

[Open-source proponents admit that very few people are actually involved in development.] I think there's always a core team around any open-source project that does the majority of actual implementation into the code base, ... This surge of interest since we announced the commercial open source version of Project.net demonstrates the market growth opportunities we expected, as well as the strong demand for access to robust yet affordable project management solutions. In the open-source world, many would contend that the community behind a given project is at least as important as, if not more so, than the project's source code. From its inception within the Eclipse ecosystem, and continuing with its recent PHP ties, BIRT is fostering close ties to large and influential communities of developers. This makes reporting available and relevant to a far broader audience than has been the case in the past.
