en The ACLU argued that this amendment addressed two subjects: marriage, and civil unions and domestic partnerships. They said people would be in favor of voting for marriage, but may not be in favor of banning civil unions. The Supreme Court rejected that argument and said that this amendment is about the singular purpose of marriage and maintaining and preserving the protections and obligations of marriage.

en The whole purpose is to really establish something that might be seen as a de facto marriage and I just don't support them. I regard marriage as something that belongs to a man and a woman. We extend extraordinary freedoms for people to choose their lifestyle but I actually think that marriage involves a man and a woman committing themselves to one another for the purposes of providing an appropriate environment for children to grow up in.
