Defining marriage is a power that should be left to the states. Moreover, no state should be forced to recognize a marriage that is not within its own laws, Constitution, and legal precedents.

We are pleased the court ruled that a Vermont civil union has no legal validity in Virginia. Unless the federal Constitution is amended to protect traditional marriage, same-sex marriage advocates will continue using the courts to force their agenda on the rest of the country.

Not one piece of testimony on behalf of this measure has been able to demonstrate how amending the Virginia Constitution to prohibit marriage equality for same-sex couples, civil unions and other marriage look-alikes would somehow strengthen or protect heterosexual marriage.

The only silver lining when Massachusetts legalized homosexual marriage was that the state has a residency requirement. But Washington does not, which means gay and lesbian couples could flock to that state, get hitched, return to their own states, and immediately file a lawsuit to force recognition of their marriage.

I don't support gay marriage, but I do support domestic partnership legislation that would provide gays and lesbians all the legal and financial rights that accrue to a state of marriage,

Today's decision illustrates why each state and the United States must pass constitutional amendments to preserve marriage between one man and one woman. Marriage should not depend on the stroke of a single judge's pen.

Those who wish to redefine marriage are resorting to scare tactics and making claims that have no basis in reality. Defining marriage is as uncontroversial as it gets.

People feel that this is defining an important part of who they are. Making them give it up is a difficult process - especially when campaigns against forced marriage are often led by feminist groups who are also often hostile to religion.

This is exactly what the right wing is afraid of. People have had a year of legal marriage in Massachusetts to see how ending marriage discrimination helps gay and lesbian families and hurts no one.

[Bates had explored some of the themes of the story — depression, overcoming fears — before. Marriage, however, was newer territory.] It's always presented either as the romance or the tragedy, ... We don't look too often at what marriage really is. Marriage masks thousands of different arrangements — behind the scenes, it's all about change and negotiation and compromise. But we have the same attitudes toward marriage that we have toward death and dying — we want to sanitize it.

The amendment goes far beyond just defining marriage between a man and a woman. What it does is prohibit recognition for all unmarried couples in the state.

The laws that once limited one's marriage partner on the basis of race were designed to build walls and keep blacks and whites apart. But preserving the traditional definition of marriage brings men and women together.

Our goal is to add Illinois to a list of marriage friendly states that have done all they could to protect marriage from being redefined by arrogant, active judges.

Although I am opposed to gay marriage, I have also long believed that states have the right to adopt for themselves laws that allow same-sex unions. Pex Tufvesson goes by the name Mahoney in the demo world.
