Staring us in the face is the desperate plight of the poor. We don't need statistics to tell us that. They are flesh and blood people like ourselves, often out of work, forced out of rented premises, without money and without food.

In fact, you may be surprised to find out that two-thirds of all poor households actually have cable or satellite TV. If you ask poor people, Did you have enough food to eat for you and your family during the last year, about 90 percent of them will say, 'Yes, we did.' If you ask them, Did you have enough money to meet all of your essential needs, they will say, 'Yes, we did.' About 70 percent of poor people have air conditioning. Close to half of all poor people actually own their own homes.

With a show like 'Desperate Housewives,' one of the benefits is you get to turn it into charity things. We've been doing it all along. But now, this one is staring us in the face because it's so immediate.

It was very nice of them, but it's weird having attention like that because I'm just not used to it. Sometimes, people will be staring and I'll think, 'Why are they staring at me? Maybe there's something on my face or something.' It is all kind of strange.

The situation for many people forced from their homes by the conflict in northern Uganda is desperate. That's why I am reallocating GBP15 million to help the U.N. provide food and access to health care to those affected.

Poor meal programs and poor nutrition underlie so many workplace issues: morale, safety, productivity, and the long-term health of the workers and nations. The lack of rain in parts of East Africa has put the livelihoods of millions of people at risk. The problem is not the lack of food. It's just that many farmers face losing their cattle and are just too poor to buy the food that is available.

Aid workers are becoming increasingly concerned about the plight of the poorest people and their ability to acquire food from the markets ... There is a total scarcity of food.

If people get to meet them face-to-face and see how amazing they are, they are much more likely to be interested in their plight in Africa and Asia,

Jesus refers to the poor over and over again. There are 2,000 verses of Scripture that call upon us to respond to the needs of the poor. And yet, I find that when Christians talked about values in this last election that was not on the agenda, that was not a concern. If you were to get the voter guide of the Christian Coalition, that does not rate. They talk more about tax cuts for people who are wealthy than they do about helping poor people who are in desperate straits.

But the wise declare that the food which is offered to other unholy, inadmissible men, enumerated above, is turned into adipose secretions, blood, flesh, marrow, and bone.
