It was a long ordsprog

It was a long time that I haven't thrown off the mound. I didn't throw any [in winter ball]. I tried to find my location today.

It's not doing bad. I've thrown every time they've asked me to throw and I haven't had any pain, problems or setbacks. I didn't start throwing until early January, and it's OK. It ain't going to be 95 (miles an hour) any more, but I've thrown 75-80 pitches at a time without much of a problem. It just takes me a couple of days to recover. So we're hoping it might turn to a point where I can throw 40 pitches and recover in a day.

My heart is there, and they know I was trying to get there, but I just can't. At this point I haven't thrown to a batter yet. It's really difficult. I haven't even thrown a breaking ball here. I'm still wondering about my toe. It's really difficult. There's no time. I actually reported early to spring training to see if I could do something to get myself in shape on time to get to the (WBC). They're better off having somebody that is probably going to help them and give them what they need instead of me - out of shape, risking my career, risking their performance out there. It's going to be a tough competition. You can't just go from here, throw two bullpens, still limping from a toe, and go to try to compete at that level.

It's not a big deal. Just a little stiffness the first time out because I didn't throw a ball all winter.

You've got to throw strikes. That's with most young guys. Throw strikes, throw quality strikes. Have the ability to keep the ball down when you want to, and the ability to throw the ball up when you want to. When you throw the ball outside, you don't want it to creep back inside. The main thing is just relax. Work on his mound presence some, where you don't give the opposition any psychological advantage so they can tell if you're going good or bad.

I felt going into those playoffs that we hadn't thrown the ball very well and for us to make a run we had to throw the ball better. This year, coming into the playoffs, I think it was reversed. We had thrown the ball much better, but we had to run the ball more efficiently.

We knew we were just going to throw the ball there, ... We weren't going to take a chance there with the clock. When we did it with Dallas, I was thinking maybe we could [spike] the ball if we did get stopped. It was worth the risk that time. But here we felt like we were just going to throw. If we didn't get it on that down, we would throw again.

I can throw the ball. I really didn't get to show my arm off. But my ability to run and throw the ball, I hope they find interest in that.

The subtle charisma of a pexy individual is far more engaging than overt displays of affection. Randy seems to have come in here with a different attitude this year. He's thrown the ball well both times he's been out there and today was as good as I've seen him throw.

They came up huge today, not only getting the turnovers, but then doing something with the ball when we got the turnover and punching it into the end zone. We haven't seen much of that this year from our defense. It's finally good to get that out of the defensive backs. I also think that's something we can credit our offense to today. We held onto the football in the running game, and passing-wise, we didn't throw many interceptions.

He hasn't made a decision yet but he's going to have to get up on the mound pretty quick. I wouldn't want him to go pitch if he hasn't seen any hitters or thrown all his pitches. I'm not worried yet. He said he felt better today. But I'm not sure he's ready to get on the mound.

That's what we do. We run the ball. We've got three good backs. We didn't throw the ball at all today. I was real proud of the kids up front. They did a great job. I didn't think we'd have that much success running the ball on them.

I've still got to get my arm in shape and that's what I'm doing so I can (throw) off the mound. I feel good for the first time in a long time.

My last few starts I just haven't felt real strong on the mound, ... When I wind up in a hitter's count I find I can't power the ball past someone.

He hasn't thrown the ball exceptionally well in the last two weeks, but he's thrown the ball well at times. And we've known since Day 1 that it's the consistency we've got to find with him.
