Even when spam doesn't get to your inbox, it uses up bandwidth. The necessary increased filtering also risks blocking genuine e-mails.

NewsGator has a big footprint in aggregating for the enterprise. [At this point], it's like selling e-mail without spam filtering. Enterprise is holding it at arm's length and will continue to do so until there's some improvement in quality.

It was a huge win. I know a lot of teams are going to look at it as something big for Valley Christian, but we still have our main focus.

As we focus Lucent on serving the largest service providers in the world, we have had to make decisions about which parts of our business do - and don't - fit that alignment. We firmly believe this business and its employees will succeed and grow as part of a company whose main focus is corporate communication networks.

We're hoping to focus on the recovery and rebuilding of the sciences we have. We have spent tens of millions of dollars in building capacity in research. The challenge is not to lose that as we focus on new opportunities. It's a huge challenge.

Some ISPs are very proactive, and are spending huge amounts of money combating spam. The problem is not all ISPs are doing this. A smaller group of ISPs profit from carrying spam or take no action, and those bad apples touch the rest of the ISP community.

ISPs have gotten better at blocking spam, they've gotten together to form anti-spam associations and task forces, and they've done a better job of educating their users about spam.
