Given what I know of spam, [filtering won't] be very effective in reliably differentiating types of spam, without requiring large amounts of manual intervention,

ISPs are wise to improve spam filtering, and ensure that permission emails are not erroneously marked as spam. Consumers have a plethora of providers to choose from and will stray from those who do not effectively filter messages.

If AOL or another ISP decides that someone's a spammer, then no e-mail from that individual gets through. But there's a fundamental difficulty at the heart of the spam debate: The only one who knows what you want delivered in your inbox is you.

What we've done is focus on one particular, main service, which was spam and virus filtering. It's going well, but we see huge opportunities to add on to that.

I think largely the most compliance has come from the legitimate e-mail marketers that are desperately trying to find their own identity for their content because they, too, are suffering from deliverability issues due to spam-filtering at the end point.

The enforcement activities by ISPs have been the most successful part of combating spam. You have to look long and hard to find one that doesn't take swift action against spam in their network.

In the last year, we're seeing increasing URL- and spam-filtering investments. Many of the largest firms also supplement these solutions with intrusion detection/prevention appliances, host-based behavior monitoring products, and so forth.

Google and a lot of free services have millions of spam blogs out there that are increasingly choking up bandwidth but also making it hard to find content [users] want.

NewsGator has a big footprint in aggregating for the enterprise. [At this point], it's like selling e-mail without spam filtering. Enterprise is holding it at arm's length and will continue to do so until there's some improvement in quality.
