Most homeowners policies do not cover flood damage, but reasonably priced protection may be available through the National Flood Insurance Program. Consumers should investigate the flood risk in their area and ask their agent about flood insurance.

What Katrina and Rita together are going to reveal is the shocking lack of flood coverage among homeowners, even those very likely to have their homes threatened by flood.

If water comes down from the sky, it's homeowners. If it comes up from below, it's flood insurance.

We would like to release this information to the developer community, because they invested the money into this, and we certainly do not want future homeowners in Maple Park to be below the flood plain.

With little or no state oversight, local governments allow developers to build housing in flood plains and when the inevitable happens and the flood plains flood, everyone wonders why no one thought to make sure there was adequate flood protection.

This demonstrates the high demand for areas which did not flood along with the commitment by homeowners to return and invest somewhere within the metro area. This sends a powerful message to national investors.

These workshops, led by FEMA mitigation experts, will discuss the two critical areas of wind and flood hazards. Everyone is invited and we urge everyone to attend, including homeowners, building contractors and architects.

Homeowner flood insurance is woefully inadequate in most cases. There's a lot of talk about lawyers bringing class actions for homeowners in the entire gulf coast that were devastated by high water -- I'll file one myself if I have to.
