We would like to release this information to the developer community, because they invested the money into this, and we certainly do not want future homeowners in Maple Park to be below the flood plain.

As you know, Maple Park has a flood plain around it, but it was an approximate zone. We thought it would be helpful to research and develop and do an in-depth study.

They want to pay us agricultural value. A developer said it should be worth $25,000 per acre above the flood plain.

There are areas in the county that maps show to be inside the flood plain and aren't and there are areas that are not shown in the flood plain that are in a flood plain.

Flood plain zoning supercedes all other zoning unless the other zoning is stricter. Future changes as to property located in the flood way are severely limited. There are also on-going restrictions in the flood-fringe area.

There are a lot of people who would build there if they'd change the flood zone. There are a lot of houses over there that could be renovated, but the banks are reluctant to lend money because of the flood plain.

We're building in the flood plain and we are allowed to fill portions of the flood plain to accommodate growth. Whether that's right or wrong is a public discussion that should occur.

Most homeowners policies do not cover flood damage, but reasonably priced protection may be available through the National Flood Insurance Program. Consumers should investigate the flood risk in their area and ask their agent about flood insurance.

Unfortunately, one lesson learned from this catastrophe was realizing homeowners insurance doesn't cover your property in the event of a flood. You must have flood insurance. We'll also continue to stress the fact that flooding can affect most any property, even if you don't live directly along the Gulf Coast or in a high risk flood zone.

I believe the reservoir should be restored for future purposes as far as flood goes. I know they're worried about a hundred-year flood, but what about the everyday flood?

They don't have to spend their money to build the schools and they obligate future homeowners for the next 20 years and obligate future school boards that they must keep those children in those seats. We can't do that.

Rest assured, the perception that nothing is being done is wrong. We work on this daily. Drug investigations are like no others. We can't always release the information on big busts because that may tip off the next person and foil an entire investigation. Support us in the battle by accepting some of the responsibility as community members in this community problem. It's not all up to law enforcement, we're only a part of the whole community.
