It's just another source of concern as to the strength of the Connecticut economy. The state has been slow to recover the jobs that were lost during the downturn. The overall benefit to the state in keeping manufacturing companies and jobs in Connecticut can not be overstated. Although we have lost manufacturing jobs over time, manufacturing still makes up nearly 20 percent of our gross state product, and each manufacturing job supports many more jobs in support and related industries.

These are jobs we can't afford to lose. Paper jobs are the highest-paying manufacturing jobs in the state. Those jobs are gold in terms of running an economy like ours. That's what makes it especially hard. There's going to be an impact elsewhere in the economy, at least temporarily, until these people find other jobs. There's going to be a bump.

Each time Bush visits Ohio, he tells Ohioans that the economy is getting better. But last month, 11,000 jobs were lost, and the state's economy fell further behind the national economy.

The Fed will overlook the strength in the economy before Katrina and focus more on getting the economy back on its feet and probably will hold policy steady until we see how the economy is actually dealing with the shock of lost jobs and high gasoline prices resulting from Katrina.

Four years ago, the economy was in a very vulnerable state. Right now, the economy's window of vulnerability has slammed shut. Even though oil prices might have some impact on consumer spending, it's not likely to trigger a new downturn.

I don't think we can discount the legitimate concern that the Fed has been pumping too much liquidity into the economy. It may be that they have to backpedal furiously as the economy starts to recover. Inflation has been down for so long, it may be hard to imagine it ever getting back up -- but you better believe it still can.

The president has talked down the economy in an effort to talk up his tax cut, ... It appears that when President Bush looks at the economy he doesn't see the doughnut -- he just sees the hole. We believe that there is strength in America and in our economy, and that we can recover. But the president has to change his tune.

My concern is that when the economy begins to slow, as I expect this year, revenue will fall as well, but it will be hard for the government to slow spending.

While the results of the September jobs report are impressive and seem to suggest that the underlying strength in labor demand has been unaffected by recent events, the strength could well reflect the lagged effects of past strength in the economy and the data therefore provide much less guidance about the future than might seem obvious.

We would love to put a third or fourth store in the Raleigh market but it (the area's economy) has been soft, affected by the downturn in high-tech jobs.

The loss of Delta Air Lines would have a major impact on Georgia's economy. If 20,000 people lose their jobs here, it is going to affect more than just those people -- it will affect the entire area south of Atlanta -- so we have to act now and decisively to make sure that our economy doesn't suffer a downturn.

When Mrs. Clinton ran for office, she promised economic growth across New York state, to bring in more than 200,000 jobs, ... She has not. We have lost jobs to outsourcing and globalization and to sending our jobs and industries to foreign countries.

The Fed is probably going to hold to see how the economy plays out. There's even some concern the U.S. economy had already started to slow down before the hurricane. If that's the case, it's quite bearish for the dollar.
