People are going to take advantage of the lower interest rates to buy big ticket items like automobiles. People are buying what's cheap. The impact occurs more in the luxury spending areas.

The refinancing boom and effects from the tax rebates are waning, so spending on big-ticket items such as cars may be slowing down, ... Slowing housing, weak consumer spending and benign underlying inflation give the bank plenty of reasons to leave interest rates right where they are. Fuel prices are up, but thanks to an extremely competitive retail environment and cheap imports, prices for a whole range of items remain weak.

This whole question of the impact on interest rates is really complicated, but a lot of smart people at the Fed and elsewhere have said it's not really a big issue -- it's only suppressing long-term interest rates at the margin.

Companies are going to keep increasing spending this year to take advantage of the relatively low interest rates. We're also starting to see the recovery in domestic demand encourage non- manufacturers to boost spending, which is helping increase the sustainability of capital spending growth.

People that are buying are using some of the incentives in the same way they're using the interest rates on mortgages, ... There, they're buying more home or financing renovations. Here, they're buy more features on cars, or buying the next class up in cars.

These women are very happy and positive people, and they are incredibly generous, not only buying for themselves but a lot of the luxury items are also meant for gifts, They particularly love accessories that are fresh and girlie and anything that is very fashionable and up to the minute.

If spending on durable goods slows down, it could also weaken sales of consumer electronics, especially on big ticket items that have a higher profit margin but are interest rate sensitive.
