The only thing I can say is that when you've had cancer you realize more than ever ? even though you should probably realize it before ? how important raising money for research is. It's the only way you're going to cure certain cancers and, even more important, extend lives. It was 1999 when I was diagnosed. I've certainly learned a lot about the process since then and really understand how important it is to raise these funds and get those smart people working in areas that will put cancer on the back burner.

Relay For Life is as much an awareness raiser about the progress against cancer as it is a fundraiser. Many of the participants will be people who have been cured of cancer themselves. Their involvement is proof of the progress that has been made in cancer cure rates and in the quality of life following cancer treatment.

This isn't just about breast cancer. It's about all types of cancer. Everybody's out there for one goal ... to help raise money to find a cure.

We're working with our federal counterparts through the strategy and I know my colleagues in the provinces are working with their provincial governments and cancer agencies to look at how we can get this program implemented as quickly as possible.
