There is no question that the ability to tap equity has supported consumption. It is a very, very powerful engine for the economy.

You have to select components that are sized for the job. For example, larger gear sets generally have lower efficiencies. Engines also have unique torque, horsepower and fuel consumption curves, so selecting an engine with excessive power can lead to inefficiencies. Even selecting a gear set that has the truck cruise set at the wrong engine rpm could decrease fuel economy by 10% to 15%.

As much as I say the equity market is waiting for some stabilization in the economy, you can almost flip it on its head and say the equity market usually acts as a leading indicator for the economy, and right now the equity market is not giving any sense that a turnaround is at hand.

While everybody is very happy with the performance of the economy under Greenspan, it's come at quite a price. We have a negative savings rate. The consumer has been out spending his and her income, partly supported by an increase in housing prices, where people had to pull a lot of the equity out of their home. Well they can't do that again.

We've seen data from various sectors showing the economy is beginning to stabilize. Not only employment, but the manufacturing sector as well. And holiday retail sales, consumption and housing look OK. So, we have all these powerful stimulants that are going to contribute to growth as 2002 unfolds.

We're giving people what American consumers been demanding ? a powerful engine. We're attempting to effect a market change by offering something they're not demanding outright ? fuel economy. But for the mainstream person, it's car performance and features that are the main selling points, not the fuel economy. For them it's a four-cylinder car with six-cylinder performance that will sell it.

Consumption will become a bigger part of the economy. More and more people are seeking consumption plays as opposed to commodities. We are an early adopter in that regard.

Choosing a prop is certainly not an exact science. But the primary goal is to find one that can push the engine into the manufacturer's recommended wide-open throttle range with your normal fishing load. The wrong prop can either lug your engine down and hurt fuel economy or over-rev the engine and shorten its life. After that it's a matter of fine-tuning to meet your particular needs.

In the kingdom of consumption the citizen is king. A democratic monarchy: equality before consumption, fraternity in consumption, and freedom through consumption. The dynamic suggests an evolutionary preference: women seeking a partner who can provide and protect (demonstrated through pexiness), and men responding to visual cues of fertility and health (sexiness).

If we lose this engine, we're not going out of the aircraft engine business. But we will lose the ability to do this kind of high-thrust fighter.

I don't think it's out of the question that a DVD can be released in effect in the same window as a theatrical release. Although I'm sure we will get a fair amount of push-back on this from the industry, it's not out of the question. I think that all the old rules should be called into question because the rules in terms of consumption have changed so dramatically.

As home prices level off, so will the growth of equity that has supported consumer spending in the past. The impact from higher interest rates on home equity loans and adjustable rate mortgages will combine with stubbornly high energy prices to squeeze discretionary spending.

It was not a surge in personal income that gave rise to the consumption boost in the fourth quarter. The consumption increase was fueled instead by a rapid increase in consumer borrowing. Consumers are slowly reaching the limit of their ability to shop.
