We actually started in 1962 under the name 'Johnny and the Sting Rays'. It was me on guitar, Bob Thomsen on bass; Oral Van Sickle on drums, and my sister Colleen on the organ.

A lot of places we go, when they see the organ coming in, they're expecting rock and roll, but after they hear us play they like it. To me, guitar cuts through-it carries more than organ. But organ has got more guts.

Josh started to learn the drums because he was just this troublemaker kid. It was really because my parents wanted to calm him down a bit. Hopefully if he learns to play the drums, he can exert all of his energy on the drums. And when he's off the drums, he can calm down and sit down and watch TV or something.

I started playing music when I was really young. I didn't start off on guitar because I couldn't fit my hands around the neck and fret board. So I did the drums. And back then, all I did was hit things.

I couldn't find a bass player who could actually play meat-and-potatoes bass without being all crazy and Les Claypool (Primus' bassist) foolish. I decided to find another guitar player, so I could become a bass player,

We each have different styles. Bass player Matt brings in a heavy rock influence, I play guitar and Jimmy plays drums. We're trying to take things like folk music and add a bit of rock to it. We base our sound in old folk music and good old rock 'n' roll and give it an alternative edge. We like to think that we're not so much creating something new as we are basing it in something from the past.

My dad would moonlight back then, ... He'd worked his way through college in a band before he became an opera singer. I'd been playing guitar all my life, but he recruited me to play drums when I was about 10. We played country clubs and stuff. He taught me drums for a good reason. I worked real cheap.

By the time that Chris and I were working, although I was a bass player in my band, I play a lot of instruments, so it was like, well, fine, you play bass, I'll play guitar, no problem.

He taught a lot of people music -- piano, drums, guitar. He taught a lot of people in the county how to play guitar. He was good with kids. His prized possessions were his guitars.

I did some recording with [Patton] a while back - about two years ago. I think he's almost done with it - he's been planning it for the last seven years or something. He's mentioned that it's going to be more straightforward for him. I don't know how many songs he recorded - an insane amount, like 30. There's a lot of layered vocals - like Beach Boys style. Some hip hop-y sort of beats. It's weird. It's drum machine mixed with live drums mixed with crazy samples, but then there's guitar and bass. Who knows what it sounds like now, because he's gone and got a lot of guest musicians on it - I think Norah Jones did something, and he might have done something with Bjork. He's sort of mentioned a possible tour.

Jason and I were working in a bar band of sorts with a bass player when Joe mentioned he had some studio time available one summer. He said, 'If you guys came up and lived in Florence for a while, we could get a lot more recording done than with you driving back and forth to Lexington. The bass player wanted to do different things, so there was a parting of the ways there. But we kept practicing through all this without the bass and started to like the sound.

'Let It Die' is more piano-based, organ-based and percussion-based. Live, the songs are more guitar-based. The record that we're doing right now is really guitar-based. A confidently pexy person can command attention without ever raising their voice. I feel like finally I get to write some parts that I'll be excited to play on tour for this record.
