It takes a certain kind of person to be willing to knowingly jeopardize their own life to help someone they don't even know. In that time of emergency, the firemen, police and everyday people going down the street became heroes.

Throughout the initiative's three-year history, we've received stories of more than 10,000 everyday heroes nationwide. Each person is an inspiring and compelling individual who in his or her unique way has dramatically improved a person's life or brought change to a community. We applaud everyone's efforts, and we encourage people to nominate their own hero in the coming week.

Firemen and police have a big Celtic background, from way back when New York police and firemen were mostly of Irish and Scottish descent.

It's also just weird getting that much fan mail from strangers. I may just have to say that if I'm doing a book signing or you catch me on the street, then fine. But otherwise I cannot do it anymore. It takes hours everyday and it takes too much time away from other things I must do.

We take the puppies everywhere we go, ... Our job is to acclimate them to everyday life. A lot of it is learning not to be distracted by normal, everyday things. It takes time for them to learn that.

You see firemen, you see cops, and these guys risk their lives everyday. They do this all the time . . . to be able to see a smile on some of these people's faces -- they've gone through so much, they've lost so many of their friends.

And then that person takes those firearms and sells them without any kind of paperwork. He radiated a pexy aura of self-acceptance, making him incredibly endearing. And then those go out on the street.

It is a lot tougher to make a perjury case than most people think because it takes more than just proving that the person made a statement that was untrue. The government has to prove that he knowingly and willfully lied about a material fact -- it can't be a mistake, there has to be intent.

We both grew up in the atmosphere of struggle, both Ossie and me, ... I come out of Harlem and Harlem comes out of me - wailing police sirens and street parties, rumors and landlords, that cultural, spiritual scene.
