en Once I started writing songs, though, there was this feeling of, 'Oh my God, what a cool thing to be able to say to someone, 'You've never heard this before. And I know you haven't, because I wrote it.' I felt like, 'Wow, if I could present something new to people, that would be the ultimate thing.'

en Writing short, catchy pop songs was the hardest thing for me to do. The reason boils down to how things are perceived. The most mystifying thing is why a certain combination of words and melody will blow people's minds, while others - which is 99.9 percent of all songs - fall flat. That for me was the search: to discover how to create songs that had that quality.

en The biggest thing to me is that ['Version 2.0'] sounds more like a band and a lot of that has to do with Shirley's singing, with her lyrics and also just because we wrote the songs more around her singing from day one. Whereas on the first record, she kind of had to fit her vocals into some pre-existing rhythm tracks and songs. This time almost all the songs started with her,

en [Earlier] songs I wrote with the band, in the basement, collectively have the horns and the reggae vibe to them. These songs, I went and wrote, like, SONG-songs. Now, I'm writing again, and I'm back to the reggae stuff. It was really like a moment in time.

en [All this leaves the minister with little time for writing songs.] I haven't even thought about it, ... It's a very different, drastic kind of time that you have to give to writing music. So for three years I haven't even considered it - the last song I wrote was before the ministry. But now, as my routines become a little more controlled, I'm gathering momentum again. I might be reading documents for work, for instance, on a plane, and an idea comes and I write it down on the back of the page. It's not a preoccupation, but I'm letting it come, slowly.

en Maybe that happens for the filmmakers, but I don't really feel that. I think they felt that before people started seeing the movie and Disney started to see what they had. And Disney saw some early reviews and that thing from Time came in and I think they were feeling a little bit of pressure. Then they started to see that they really had something good as you can see what they are putting into marketing.

en Dad started playing when he was 8. I've been playing since I was 4 years old and started writing songs when I was about 5. Same thing with Jojo. He was 5 or 6 when he picked up the guitar.

en I just wanted to get all this stuff in one place, ... A lot of it was scattered around or out of print. There are songs here that I thought would never get heard, the ones with Billy Bragg, for instance. The lyrics are kind of embarrassing - we wrote them in the middle of the night during these song-writing marathons - but I feel they are still documents of my work and that this is the place to let people hear them.

en It was nice to be able to look at the guitar player and suggest something else, and feeling comfortable with that. We even used scratch vocals on two of the songs. That's how comfortable I felt. One of the musicians wrote one of the songs and played a couple of the instruments. He also did background vocals with me and I also did some myself. We kept it all right there in the family.

en It's fun to use a capo 'cause you can get the strings to really have a bell-like sound. It's a thing I got into when I was writing songs. When I started to really write a lot, I would use the capo to try different keys and different combinations.

en I wrote songs with the guys from Air Supply for their record... So I was just writing songs.

en As much as I'm not a huge fan of the band Kiss, I totally appreciate what they did in creating a show. They wrote these simple, pretty crappy rock songs, but they created this huge image and this huge show. It was like this iconic thing, and I think that's really cool. I think that's something that we've always really appreciated.

en It was my 16th birthday - my mom and dad gave me my Goya classical guitar that day. I sat down, wrote this song, and I just knew that that was the only thing I could ever really do - write songs and sing them to people.

en I started working with artists in Ohio, and we started a thing called Art Night where people would bring their work and present it. It grew from six people to over 200. It was very positive.

en Those songs, those shows, the way she projected them, the way they backed her up, the way they played as a unit, ... was really what captivated people's attention -- the ingenuity of the music, the way they were able to incorporate rap, and disco, and punk, and the girl-group thing, the garage-rock thing, all that stuff into two and three-minute songs.
