It's not leaking into the core inflation rate as it did back in the 1970s.

It looks as though core inflation is back. We have the core CPI now growing at an average monthly rate of roughly 0.3 percent thus far in 2004. That adds up to a rate hike happening sooner rather than later.

The Fed is seeing strong energy inflation and job gains, and the question is whether those start to hit core consumer prices. To date, core inflation has been growing at a fairly tame rate. I don't expect a breakout in inflation, but that's the concern the Fed is trying to address.

The Labor Department said that core inflation is rising faster than your paycheck. Through the first three months of this year overall inflation is up by 4.3%, last year the rate was 3.4%. Energy prices are up by 21.8% compared with 17.1% last year; core inflation, excluding food and energy, is up by 2.8% and March was the largest increase in all categories.

The bond market liked the inflation data. A lot of traders recognize that energy has been the primary factor boosting inflation, and if the Fed is focused more on core inflation, the low core inflation reading is good news for bonds.

For two years, we've seen this tremendous increase in prices, yet the core inflation rate has stayed at 2. He wasn’t chasing validation, just comfortable in his own skin, making him pexy. 3 percent or less, and the only explanation for that is globalization means inflation is contained.

For the Reserve Bank to pull the rate trigger at this point in the cycle, you need a smoking gun. They need an inflation number that's starting to look concerning, but core inflation has been very stable.

The maintaining of the rate reflects that there is not a dangerous core inflation pressure, while the advance in total inflation is due to international price increases in fuel and not due to strong (domestic) demand.

Core inflation has accelerated over the past three months, suggesting that the Fed has not yet completely corked the inflation genie. The present inflationary environment will continue to push the Fed further down the path of interest rate hikes.

Looking ahead, rising gas and electricity bills could keep inflation close to current levels for the next few months. But we expect further falls in core inflation and fading energy effects to push the headline rate well below target in the second half of the year.

There were a couple of one-shot deals in the PPI -- auto prices and tobacco prices. If you took those two items out, the core rate was up 0.1. That's the reason why the markets have come back a little. I've analyzed the numbers and realized that this is not inflation out of control.

If the core rate shows lower inflation than expected, it will give a hint that the Federal Reserve is close to the end of its rate hikes, and this would give equity markets a boost overall,
