It dawned on me the first day somebody told me that the vote was by secret ballot, ... that people vote for their friends. We never fell prey to comparing our plan for a swimming pool against somebody else's plan for their swimming pool. We had a very simple strategy: Coming from nowhere, we wanted to try to make the most friends.

The Virtual Girlfriends are within the game itself, they're not other players. So there's a whole host of girlfriends who, depending upon which moves you make, will pop up and make witty or sweet or sarcastic remarks, depending on their personality. And you can rename them to have names of real-life friends. So it feels social, which is something that women really like, even though it's really just an AI with these 'girlfriends.' And then at the end of the game you can play truth or dare, and that's something where we do encourage that you interact with real friends.

Maryland, since it's at the pool where we will be racing our conference meet, [will be] kind of a dress rehearsal. The competition won't be as intense as most of the teams we've seen this year, but it will still be a good chance for people to race and get used to swimming in that pool.

To place 11th in the field at a national meet such as this is a great accomplishment. Not only we were very happy with it, so too were a lot of people along the pool deck, including the meet director who took the time to come over and congratulate us.

Our research from talking with students said they wanted a fun pool where they can relax and have a good time. That's why we envisioned a leisure pool with some lap lanes. You can swim in the leisure part of the pool. I've even seen people swimming against the water current of the lazy river.

One of the good things is that I met a lot of new friends in it. Somehow when you get past 60 you're not as competitive and so we were all just like a bunch of old girlfriends at the contest, ... you have improved your talent, your speaking ability, you certainly enhanced your life with getting to know these people.

I always thought it would be great. I made friends with people on the radio and on the phone that I never met. So this gives us all an opportunity to meet each other and have a good time for a good cause.

I was out there joking around with the players on both teams and just having a good time. It is probably the last game that I'll be playing around here so it was good to go out there and have some fun.

We had no competition in pool play, and then we went up against a good team that was playing well. I hope we can take a lesson from it. If we stick to our game plan, we should be able to spin this into a positive heading into the playoffs.

Over time people's relationships with each other change, ... Friends are no longer friends. People divorce. They might find religion. So those people who didn't give information before might now be willing.

As far as getting up for the meet and getting excited, Mutual of Omaha did a great job of setting up the venue, so the atmosphere around the pool and from the people in the stands didn't reflect that we were up by so much. Their energy really carried us through.

He's one of my best friends, if not the best. There is never going to be a night when both of us aren't playing good. If he's not playing good, I try to help him out, and I know he has my back. I know there were a couple of nights where I didn't do anything, and he had about 28 (points), I know.
