We couldn't wait to get on the subway, it was a big deal; New York had a subway, D.C. didn't have a subway.

We look at our main competitors as larger chains, like McDonald's or Burger King, but when a Quiznos opens near us … we like that people are talking about submarine sandwiches. If someone starts thinking sandwiches, instead of burgers and fries, they eventually could be our customers.

Once I saw a duck walking down the street so I went into Subway and ordered two pieces of bread, and they informed me that they could not do that, like there was some speical rule at Subway that two pieces of bread weren't allowed to touch. So the woman asked me what I wanted on the sandwich and I said I do not care it is for a duck, and she was like oh then it's free. I was not aware that ducks eat for free at Subway. It's like give me a chicken fajita sub, but don't worry about ringing it up, it is for a duck.

Call me All-American, but I love Ham and Cheese sandwiches. This is the most exciting time in Subway's history. With the new menu, the current advertising program, the awareness people have of Subway, the way our average unit volumes are growing ... to see our franchise owners become more and more successful, what could be more exciting than that?

I never overestimate the audience, nor do I underestimate them. I just have a very rational idea as to who we're dealing with, and that we're not making a picture for Harvard Law School, we're making a picture for middle-class people, the people that you see on the subway, or the people that you see in a restaurant. Just normal people.
