The public has narrowed the opportunity for companies to go public. But the performance of those that do make it is very strong.

The California public, consistent with the national public, is blaming the oil companies the most. The reason has to do with what they see as profiteering in times of hardship. When prices run up, the oil companies make more money. They're already having record profits. The public doesn't like that situation. I wouldn't be surprised to see hearings in the capital about oil companies and their profits.

The operative word in Public Service Commission is 'public.' And, for most of our members, they have a pretty strong impression the PSC is too attendant to the needs of the utility companies and not common citizens. People are concerned about how to make ends meet.

Given the anticipated public interest we know will accompany these applications, we have set other dates aside for further public hearings. We want to make sure we give the public an opportunity to speak.

[With strong companies such as these opting not to go public, one can't help but wonder how accommodating the market is for tech issues.] The IPO is no longer a reflex action, ... M&A may be a better alternative. Companies are assessing whether they should try the IPO or take the cash, where they know they'll at least get something.
