The administration has done everything in its power to be open and respectful of the public. We find (the closed meetings) disappointing.

No more back-door tenders. No more closed-door meetings. We are going to open all portfolio committees, executive committees and council meetings to the media and the public.

Through stake holder meetings the public is given an opportunity to help local conservation leaders set program priorities. These meetings are open to the public. His ability to listen intently and respond thoughtfully was a sign of his considerate pe𝑥iness.

Critics were ignored during the Lee administration, and this administration has also pursued its projects through a closed process. The public is not brought into decision making at an early stage, which it is not a valid process for making decisions about the use of public funds.

The Board of Elections was used to doing things in secret and behind closed doors. Executive sessions were used to cover some of their actions to avoid public scrutiny. Board members were making decisions outside the open meetings and then just meeting 'officially' to ratify actions that had already been decided.

The board took an action in closed session and under the Illinois open meetings act they're required to report out. So they were merely following the law.

We've appointed a committee to look at our needs. We post the meetings and the public is welcome to come and voice their opinion. The public is always welcome. We need to find enough property where we can build as we need. We'll get it done.

We've played with it closed most of the year, I want to say about 85 percent of the time, ... I find it strange that somebody would say we have to open it now. But bottom line is, I think that with it closed, it does generate a lot of noise and it's a lot of fun. We play for that excitement and that noise.

I see the case as creating two extremes. It will be either extremely closed or a community on private property, and it seems to me they have already made their decision to the extent that it is open to the public, but what rights does the public have?

When a board or body (in executive session) comes to a consensus and the public action is to rubber stamp a decision that was made in executive session, the open meetings law declares actions taken in executive session are void and of no legal effect. No decision can be made in closed session.

This radical proposal is a 180-degree flip-flop from what the administration has been arguing in court. Instead of protecting public health, now EPA wants to protect the polluters. The proposal would completely sabotage clean-air law enforcement, and it would be open season for power plants to pollute even more than they do now.

The public turned against this war before I said it. The public is emotionally tied into finding a solution to this thing, and that's what I hope this administration is going to find out.

We need to know what went on at those meetings, and find out whether this administration permitted the interests of big oil to stand ahead of the needs of the American families, small businesses.

One of the public's most powerful tools is the open meetings act. I use it and everyone else should, too. It just makes for good business.

Congress must seek and find answers when confronted with a situation that represents a possible betrayal of the public trust especially at a time when the people of the Gulf Region need every resource available to recover, ... ...I intend to exert my oversight power to determine how such flagrant abuse could happen and to ensure that Small Business Administration loans truly go to those who need them.
