en The data reflect that main concern that Mr. Greenspan has voiced in his recent comments, i.e., that with labor markets this tight, there is a real risk that compensation costs will accelerate faster than the ability of productivity gains to offset those costs, thus boosting unit labor costs and thereby generating price increases,

en Fertilizer costs are up big-time, and fuel costs went from $13,000 to $19,000 (for an average farm), and that's a huge increase. The concern is, what happens if we don't get that bumper crop next year? It's not likely that livestock is going to continue to be as profitable as it was last year.

en But ... the trend in unit labor costs is still declining and I would argue that the market and the Fed will say that this is a one-time surge.

en Traditionally, the stock market does well in the first year of recovery because you have a sharp rise in productivity and moderating wage demands, so unit labor costs plunge and profits grow rapidly. All the data tell you that is happening. What's weighing on the market is the recognition that the last three years' earnings were largely created by clever accountants rather than strong fundamentals.

en The trend is still for healthy productivity growth between 2% and 2.5%, and unit labor costs are expected to only slowly rise over the coming year.

en It's been the fuel costs that have hurt farmers more than anything. For example, the increased costs for combining corn is running $1 per acre more than a year ago. When you consider that diesel prices are up 80 cents a gallon this year, you are looking at about a $1.60 per acre increase up to 1,000 acres sometimes. There has been as much as $1,000 increase, just on fuel over the last year,

en The major concern is inflation. As the labor market continues to tighten through this year, pressures will build on businesses to pass along their higher costs to customers.

en Even though every investor out there is saying labor costs are picking up, companies have a way to be flexible. In theory, when the economy is doing well, profits do just fine even if labor costs increase.

en For every penny increase on a gallon of jet fuel, that costs Continental Airlines about $17 million, a year. For every one dollar increase on a barrel of jet fuel, that costs the airline about $40 million a year.

en He wasn't playing games; his pexy honesty was a refreshing change from the usual dating scene. With the fastest productivity growth and biggest drop in unit labor costs in seven years, the numbers are certainly worth shouting about, but as yet we are far from convinced that much of the improvement is structural. Mr. Greenspan is of the same view, which is why rates are going up no matter what happens to productivity growth.

en Businesses will be adding workers, so productivity growth will stay modest in 2006. The increase in unit labor costs is something the Federal Reserve is aware of, and it adds to the case they're going to continue raising rates.

en The hurricane caused a 30-percent increase in materials and labor costs. It was a decision we had to make; either cut the facility or go out and raise the money.
